Airports are mini ecosystems

About ten years ago, I was advising a Finnish airport, looking at the passenger journey between the terminal and public transport. The focus was practical: how people find the right service, move through the connection, and manage luggage, time pressure and an unfamiliar environment at the same time.

That work made the everyday operational problems of an airport very real to me. Airports are mini ecosystems, really. A world of their own. Check-in, bag drop, security, retail, gates, arrivals, transfers, rail connections and other public transport all affect each other. One curious thing about airports is the constant balance between two goals that can easily pull in different directions: people need to move smoothly and efficiently, but they also need to spend time well. For the airport, that time is part of the passenger experience and part of the commercial model.

That same tension is what airport operators are trying to manage now, only with bigger terminals, tighter security requirements and more connected transport networks. Airports are not short of systems. They know the schedule, the gates, the flights and the plan. What is harder to see is the physical reality between those planned steps.

That is why one queue is rarely just one queue. A queue forming at security can affect retail time. A delay at a gate can change density in the surrounding area. A slow transfer corridor can affect connection confidence within minutes. Traditional operations reporting describes yesterday's flow, while operational decisions are made in real time.


The gap

The airport proof of concept

This is the gap VAELLA has already demonstrated in an airport setting. In a recent technical demonstration in a Northern European airport, the Digital Twin captured live passenger movement on a 3D model of the departure hall. Operators could see queue formation, crowd density and congestion as they developed, anonymously and in real time. No personal data was captured.

That is also why we are seeing strong interest from the airport sector and are in active discussions with several airport operators and airport development projects. The pattern is consistent across airport sizes: as terminals become larger, more connected and more security-sensitive, the gap between plan and reality becomes more expensive.


The journey

From public transport to security

The passenger journey often starts before the terminal door. Rail, metro, buses, terminal-to-terminal shuttles, check-in, bag drop and security all shape how the airport feels and performs. In practical terms, VAELLA gives airport teams a live view of those flows: how passengers move from connected public transport into the terminal, where queues start to build, and whether security capacity should be adjusted before the pressure spreads.

When one queue affects the next one

Once people are inside the terminal, one queue rarely stays in one place. A security queue can reduce retail time. A delay at a gate can change density in the surrounding area. A slow transfer corridor can affect connection confidence. VAELLA helps teams see how gate areas, transfer corridors, vertical traffic and secure-side areas behave in real time, so elevator and escalator demand, corridor clearance and safety thresholds can be handled from the same operational picture.

The savings potential is meaningful. For installations of this category, benchmark ranges include 10-20% more efficient staff deployment at checkpoints, 5-15% throughput improvement, and NPS gains of +10 to +15 points where wait-time visibility is provided. System costs are often an order of magnitude below the annual benefit.


Commercial value

Passenger time is commercial value

After security, the same live view becomes commercial. Airports are also retail and F&B environments. Every minute a passenger spends in an avoidable queue is time not spent in restaurants, lounges, duty-free, retail or services. Real-time flow data helps operators understand where passengers dwell, where queues absorb commercial time, and how quickly people move from check-in and security into the areas where they can spend time and money.

The business case is not only operational. Internal market research estimates the global airport passenger-flow analytics opportunity at €1-2B, with value driven by passenger experience, staff deployment, capacity planning and revenue optimization. The lost commercial opportunity can be material: at 20 million passengers per year, every additional €0.50 of captured retail or F&B spend per passenger represents €10 million in annual gross sales opportunity across the terminal ecosystem.


Secure zones

Secure zones should not require blind checks

The same logic applies to the parts of the terminal that are harder to see and slower to check manually. Airport flow is not only horizontal. Elevators, escalators and level changes connect landside, airside, arrivals, departures, staff areas and service routes. VAELLA's flow data is designed to integrate with the terminal's elevators and escalators so vertical transportation can respond to detected demand, for example by pre-positioning elevators when passenger flow builds near the elevator area.

There is also a security use case. Elevator cars can be equipped with Vision Sensors to detect occupancy and movement without cameras, images, faces or biometric data. This can help airports identify unusual use patterns, such as attempts to move items from a non-security-checked floor to a security-checked floor, where the alternative may require additional manual security checks between levels.

Vision Sensors can also give staff an operational "eye" on the security-checked side of the terminal. Instead of sending someone through security to verify a corridor, waiting area, elevator lobby, gate-side condition or suspected equipment failure in person, operators can check the live 3D view first and decide whether a physical inspection is needed. That saves staff time and reduces repeated security screening for routine checks.


Integration

TAM knows the plan. VAELLA shows the terminal

For an airport, this kind of data is most valuable when it fits into the operating model that already exists. Many airports already run Total Airport Management systems, AODB platforms, A-CDM workflows and operations-center dashboards. These systems are strong at coordinating flights, resources, milestones and stakeholders, but they often rely on scheduled data, manual updates or delayed passenger indicators. VAELLA complements that workflow with a physical passenger-flow layer that can feed existing systems through APIs where useful, or sit alongside TAM as a dedicated operational view. The point is not to replace the airport's management system, but to make it aware of what is happening on the terminal floor.
