Why ferry terminals feel familiar
As a Finn, one of my first childhood travel memories was a ferry trip to Sweden. And I am not the only one. Finland is basically an island when it comes to international travel. If you want to go abroad without flying, taking a ferry is often part of the plan. Almost four out of ten Finnish leisure trips abroad have been made by boat, equal to about 3.1 million trips in a year. Finnish ports also handle about 13.5 million international sea passengers annually. So for me, ferry terminals have always been both familiar and operationally interesting.

From passenger experience to terminal operations
That early interest later became professional work. Around the mid-2010s, I was involved in consulting work for a major Nordic passenger harbor, focused on making passenger flows and terminal operations smoother. The work supported the development of a new ferry terminal area and looked at very practical questions: how to separate arriving and departing passengers, how to reduce conflicts between flows, and how to speed up vessel unloading and loading.
That work made one thing clear: the challenge is not just the building. It is the whole operating window around the vessel.
Ferry terminals operate on sharp, vessel-driven peaks. Activity can move from quiet to overloaded within minutes, and the operating challenge is not only capacity. It is coordination across arrivals and departures, pedestrians and vehicles, luggage-heavy passengers and tour groups, all moving through the same limited space.
Having worked for several years with ferry and passenger terminals on people-flow and logistics challenges, the same pattern comes up quickly: the real problem is not that operators do not know the timetable. They know it very well. The problem is that the real-time window is short. When a queue starts building, when a corridor is not clearing, or when passengers and vehicles start interfering with each other, there is not much time to react.
Finland aside, the scale is global and growing fast. Ferry passenger traffic is measured in the billions annually, with market estimates ranging from about 1.2 billion passengers in 2022 to 2-4+ billion annual passenger journeys depending on counting method. In Europe alone, ports handled around 418 million ferry passengers at the 2019 pre-pandemic peak, and European ferry passenger traffic grew by about 12% in 2023. The bigger the flows get, the more important those short operating windows become.

When the peak starts, the clock is already running
We are currently speaking with several port and terminal operators in Europe, as well as stakeholders in the cruise industry, to understand where real-time flow visibility can add the most value.
VAELLA gives terminal teams real-time passenger flow visibility on a 3D model of the terminal, anonymously and with no personal data captured. Based on the discussions we are having, the most relevant use cases cluster around four themes: managing embarkation and disembarkation peaks, verifying corridor clearance and passenger headcount, improving customs and security queue response, and supporting incident response through live occupancy and safety-threshold alerts.
Industry research points to outcomes such as throughput improvement and more efficient staffing at instrumented zones, measurable passenger experience gains where wait-time visibility is provided, and faster incident response and proactive congestion management enabled by real-time operational awareness.
Vertical transport
Elevators and escalators should see the peak coming
Ferry terminals concentrate vertical transportation demand into short windows around vessel turnarounds. VAELLA's flow data is designed to integrate with the terminal's elevators and escalators so vertical transportation can respond to detected flow - for example, pre-positioning elevators when passenger flow approaches the elevator area ahead of vessel departure. The value is simple: tighter coordination between the building's people-moving equipment and the actual flow on the floor.
Live operations
The report after the peak is too late
This is where I think the value becomes very practical. Ferry terminals do not need another report after the peak is over. They need a live view while the peak is happening, so operations, security, vertical transportation and passenger services can work from the same picture. For terminals exploring this, the next useful step is a conversation around the layout, vessel patterns and KPIs that matter most - from boarding peaks to corridor clearance and incident response.
